-Roy is scary

-"That's what it is to be a slave" (possible societal theme)

-Roy pulls Deckard up

-Roy's expiration date is coming, his last few moments he tells Deckard of the things he's seen

-The dove is symbolic of the replicant's humanity in some way

-I think the nail meant something too, maybe since Roy's expiration was coming he wanted to feel true human pain

-"It's too bad she won't live; but then again, who does?"

-The rain and darkness of the movie convey darker themes and introduce the theme of the Unknown

2001: A Space Odyssey - Notes

-Opening is similar to that of opera

-Famous movie soundtrack

-Amazing scenery

-I can tell it was made in the 60s because of the CGI

-Women have shorter haircuts (pixie cuts)

-Shows the time period

-No one took into account how much styles would change

-The only styles of clothing that are more “futuristic” are the outfits worn by flight attendants

-Some of the things in this movie are so far stretched that they forgot to show advancements in the most basic things

-Ex. Clothing, cells phones, how people talk, cameras, politics, computer screen quality

Beyond the Aquila Rift

This short blew my mind. The animation, to start, was phenomenal. It was hard to believe that the characters weren't actually real people, and they were in fact animated. After researching the short some more, I found out that the actors who voice each character do in fact look like the animations. The photos posted with this are of Henry Douthwaite, the voice actor of Thom. I wanted to show a side-by-side comparison of the actor in real life versus animation because it is actually mind-boggling to me how accurate it is. British author, Alastair Reynolds, wrote Beyond the Aquila Rift. The short was published by Gollancz and edited by Jonathan Strahan and William Schafer. The technology in the film was insanely advanced and reminded me of the technology used by Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Being set in space, I saw similarities between the short and Guardians of the Galaxy. The way they were able to use technology mid-air was fascinating. When Thom, Suzy, and Ray went to sleep in the liquid oxygen, it was vastly similar to what happened in a show called The 100. In that show, Earth was apocalyptic and presumed to be unliveable. Later in the series, the characters are in search of a new planet that was liveable for humans. They went to sleep in liquid oxygen and traveled lightyears en route to a new home. Beyond the Aquila Rift is essentially futuristic, however, I don't believe it will happen in the way that the short displayed. It is almost too exaggerated. The future will definitely consist of needing to travel lightyears where you'll have to sleep in liquid oxygen, but I do not think everyone will end up trapped in a simulation where your life is a constant loop. Thinking about this is unsettling. The short foresees a future so overstated that it is hard to believe. I really enjoyed this short because of how unexpected it was. The short was truly insane and I genuinely wish I could watch a full-length movie about it.

Metropolis Notes

The introduction slides describing the making of the movie describe the marvels of technology

- Shift change = emotionless

- The above and below the Earth’s surface show the difference between high society and the poor

- It seemed like the two separate societies do not know a lot of each other as Freder was shocked when he saw the girl

- Workers are seemingly being sacrificed

- Metropolis is very futuristic. I never realized that even in the 1920s people were fantasizing about the future in the same way that we do today. The scene at 19 minutes shows an amazing overlay of the city - the planes, cars, trains, formation of the buildings, etc.

It seems like Freders father is aware of what happens in the underworld while Freder is completely shocked

- 24:20 super interesting shots of the city

- Freder is shocked that his father says the people belong in the depths

- Freders father, Joh, has uncovered a secret plan by the workers and makes Josaphat go to work in the depths

- The depths are so depressing that Josaphat almost kills himself over it

- It looks like the depths and the workers are the people keeping the upper world lit up

- Freder is given a hat with a number signifying the workers of the depths are the only numbers to Metropolis

- The inventor is trying to revive Hel, Freders mother

- Using technology, the inventor invents the Machine-Man

- Freder finds one of those secret plans

- Joh finds out the drawings are plans for 2,000-year-old catacombs underneath Metropolis

- Freder and all the workers go to the catacombs and in the center of the room is the woman that he was searching for

- 53 minutes is showing the creation of the Tower of Babel

- The construction process is like the depiction of the pyramids

- Freder is chosen as the mediator between both worlds

- Joh asked the inventor to turn the Machine-Man into the likes of Maria

- Maria is trapped by the inventor

- Freder searches for a monk

- The machine man is tasked with destroying the city

- The real Gregory is captured for Freder

- Josaphat still works for Metropolis

- Maria is captured

- 1 hour 23 minutes Maria is being experimented on by the Machine Man to get her face

- The portrayal of the robot Maria was fascinating

        - Undereye makeup

        - Smirk

        - Evil

- Freder goes to Joh to see Maria and experiences extreme visions/hallucinations

- 1:31 in an exhibition the evil Maria is shown off to the rich of Metropolis

- The machine maria is displayed as the apocalyptic page in the Bible foreshadowing the apocalypse

- Fights start to break out in Metropolis

- Maria is found with the Inventor in a cell

- In the depths, the Machine Man is spreading rebellion to destroy the machines

-Freder breaks in to tell the workers it is not the real Maria, but they do not listen and start attacking him

        - Imitation

- Gullible and influential

- Dehumanization

Creative Process for Final

When deciding on a movie, we wanted it to be something creative that no one else would do. We googled sci-fi movies and passed around a bun...
