The Matrix Debate Conclusion

The phrase "red pill vs. blue pill" refers to the ultimatum Neo is given at the end of the film, The Matrix. Both sides of the debate make extremely valid arguments. Taking the blue pill, you are continuing to live your normal day-to-day life with content. With the red pill, you are told your entire life is a lie and are expected to handle the truth gracefully. The blue side made the point of "ignorance is bliss," which ended up being a huge topic of discussion for both sides. Red pill takers disagreed with the statement, while blue pill takers continued arguing its truth. Taking the blue pill, you essentially are living a "lie," however, the only life you've ever known isn't broken apart. You continue to live your life in comfort and contentment - without fear. The red pill, however, leaves you with constant fear and worry. You don't actually know that Morpheus is telling you the truth and your stability is destroyed. In the end, each side never actually agreed on who technically "won" the debate. From my own personal perspective, I agree with taking the blue pill. I am very content with my current life. To know that every relationship I've ever made, or the entire life I've lived, was not real, I could not handle it. I side with the blue pill.

Collage Creative Process

To start our creative process, we met up and began to brainstorm ideas. We made a list of specific details from the movie that we knew we wanted to incorporate. After that, we thought of places we could find these items and gathered as many things as we could that related to the movie in any way possible. We thought of ways to enhance our creativity, leaving us with a collage we were all very proud of and had a fun time making. I have to say the most challenging part of this project was making an origami unicorn. I had to watch so many tutorials and almost gave up on it 3 times. I was able to find a tutorial for the unicorn shown in Blade Runner - which I found to be pretty cool. The collage consists of magazine cutouts, stickers, paint, cardboard, duct tape, drawings, origami, and so many more materials. This was a really enjoyable process and I am proud of how it turned out!

Notes post class:

It was interesting to see how each group interpreted the assignment. There were many elements from the film that each group decided to point out collectively - like the dove or the unicorn. We were prompted with the question of how the quote resonates with you personally. For me, it was a challenge to respond at first. It is a powerful quote, which is why I struggled to resonate with it. I have been fortunate enough to not experience anyone close to me pass, so I have never encountered death in the ways others have. However, the quote reminded me of past books I've read relating to the afterlife. One book, which unfortunately I cannot remember the title of, shows the afterlife as decreasing in age each year that one is there. The protagonist of the novel is a teenager who learns these things over time while in the afterlife. The quote essentially describes life flashing before your eyes before death. This is shown similarly in so many films. Roy's life is fading away with the raindrops and there is no one left to share those memories. Everyone who shared his experiences have passed. This film was amazing and I really enjoyed interpreting it.

The Matrix: Red Pill vs Blue Pill

 Blue pill pro:

-You live your constant life again

-Your life isn’t broken up

-From what you heard you won’t die taking the pill

-You don’t live a risky life by taking the blue pill

-Ignorance is bliss

-Lives a life without fear

-Live in comfort

-Content with life

-Personally, I am happy with my life and would not want to find out that everything I've ever known has been a complete lie and a waste of time.

Red Pill Con:

-You don’t know who Morpheus is

-Still ignorant

-He just told you your entire life is a lie

-He’s breaking up your stability

-You may die

-Constant fear and worry

-What if Morpheus and his gang are the bad guys and they’re lying

-What if the agents are good guys

-There would be no sequel unless Neo took the red pill. He took it as a director's choice, not because of his own.

Phillip K. Dick Research

Phillip Kindred Dick was an American science-fiction novelist. In his lifetime, he produced 44 novels and roughly 121 short stories. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 16, 1928, along with his twin sister Jane who survived only 8 weeks postpartum. Although he was born in Chicago, he lived in Berkeley, California most of his life with his mother. By 1952, Dick became a published author. Dick's most famous works include, the Hugo-award-winning "The Man in the High Castle," "A Scanner Darkly," "Valis," and, of course, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" - which was adapted into the 1982 film, "Blade Runner." Unfortunately, Dick died of heart failure only 4 months prior to the release of the movie in 1982. This film allowed Dick to achieve a significant amount of financial stability towards the end of his life. Prior to the adaptation, Dick was never financially successful as a writer - despite being an accomplished science-fiction writer and award-winning author. Since his passing at the age of 53, numerous other writings of Dick were later adapted into other films. In addition, his unpublished novels have since been published. Phillip K. Dick was one of the most influential science-fiction writers and his legacy lives on.

Creative Process for Final

When deciding on a movie, we wanted it to be something creative that no one else would do. We googled sci-fi movies and passed around a bun...
